Design inputs for mobile machinery
Battery voltage alone is not sufficient for sizing. The motor must deliver the required function when the supply is at its lowest permissible voltage and should tolerate charging voltage, repeated starts and short overloads without excessive temperature or brush wear.
| Operating input | Effect on the motor |
|---|---|
| Minimum and maximum voltage | Defines current, speed and controller operating range. |
| Peak and continuous torque | Determines electromagnetic and thermal utilisation. |
| Dust, water and temperature | Influences protection, seals, cooling and insulation. |
| Shock and vibration | Affects bearings, brushgear, connectors and mounting. |
| Installation envelope | Defines shaft, flange, orientation and service access. |
Repair versus redesign
Repair can be the fastest route when the existing motor is correctly sized and the failure is local. If failures recur, an updated replacement can preserve the machine interfaces while improving winding, cooling, protection or bearing arrangement for the real duty.
