Engineering points for compressor drives
The motor cannot be selected from compressor shaft power alone. Starting against residual pressure, the compressor principle, unloading strategy and number of starts per hour can produce a peak torque and current far above the steady operating point. These values determine the winding, commutator and controller requirements.
| Input | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Compressor type and pressure | Defines the torque characteristic during start-up and loaded operation. |
| Speed range | Influences cooling, commutation and available shaft power. |
| Starts and duty cycle | Determines transient and average thermal loading. |
| Supply and controller | Sets current limits, voltage range and control behaviour. |
| Ambient conditions | Affects insulation, ingress protection and cooling reserve. |
Common reasons for premature failure
Repeated starts without adequate cooling, blocked ventilation, operation above the specified pressure and poor alignment can overheat windings or overload bearings. A replacement should therefore reproduce the interfaces of the old motor while correcting the cause of failure where necessary.
